Middle School Sports

In several sports, 7th and 8th grade students will be eligible to participate on our high school teams.  There are some offerings at the middle school that overlap with the high school teams that allow middle school students to participate.

There are also several sports that are offered exclusively at the high school that will continue to offer opportunities for middle school students to participate at the high school.

If you are a parent of a 6th grade student, you are ONLY eligible to participate in the middle school option.  The MSHSL does not allow participation in MSHSL sanctioned teams until you are a 7th grader.

The middle school option will provide an enrichment and development experience for your child, with competitive opportunities.  There will be one competition level and all middle schoolers will compete against other middle school aged students.

The high school option is a more intense experience with multiple levels of teams (Varsity, JV, 10th grade, and 9th grade, or any combination of these levels).  Your student may potentially be playing against high school aged students from other schools.  Typically, athletes who excel in a certain sport and have played organized traveling or club, would select this option.

There is a tiered fee structure for middle school participation.  The standard fee is $70 per activity.  If you qualify for partial educational benefits, the fee is 50% (or $35) per activity.  If you qualify for free educational benefits, the fee is $25 per activity.

You will need to create an account if you have never registered for a sport or activity.  This will be the majority of families (unless your child did theater at the middle school last year, or if they participated at the high school).

Please note that a current sports physical is needed in order to participate in sports activities.  Sports physicals are good for 3 years from the date of the exam and are different from wellness checks.  When you make an appointment, please be sure to clarify that you need a sports physical with your clinic.

Currently, sports registrations open and close by season.  Fall sports are currently open and will be open throughout the fall sports season.  Winter and spring registration will be open a few weeks prior to the start of each respective season.

YES!  We are using the standard MSHSL eligibility form and you can disregard the grade and age qualifiers if you are a 6th grade family.  Additionally, if there is an opportunity for your 7th or 8th grade student to “play up” at the high school, the necessary forms have already been completed and there will not be a need to register again.

**Adapted athletic eligibility is based on parameters stated in a students Individualized Education Plan (IEP).  There are two divisions in Adapted Athletics (PI and CI).  Please contact Ronna Johnson at rejohnson@isd191.org if your family has interest and believe you meet these parameters
